Located in the mainly Portuguese area of Toronto between Ossington and Dundas street West is an inviting little snack bar cum restaurant called Brockton General. Brockton General was formerly a Portuguese sports bar. The new owners and first time restaurateurs Pam Thomson and Brie Read revamped the Portuguese sports bar into a clean, bright and rustic space with a few tables and a little bar.
Close friends Pam and Brie found the little space on Craigslist and with the help of seasoned chef Guy Rawlings turned the Portuguese sports bar into the restaurant it is today. The dcor of the restaurant is charming and rustic with little vases of wild flowers, mismatched antique china and tiny jars of raspberry jam which makes the tables look very welcoming. The restaurant space is small and seats no more than 30. The walls are strewn with a few paintings including one by Jay Dart. A worn out door is used as a chalkboard which lists the quebec and Ontario cheeses, that are served a $16 a plate.
Guy Rawlings mans the kitchen alone and each night he writes the menu on a roll of chart paper which is hung on a blank wall of the restaurant. The menu changes frequently and usually consists of two appetizers and three mains. One look at the menu and it's evident that it has been carefully orchestrated. Dinner at Brockton General is served on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, however the drinks and the bar menu are available on all nights. The restaurant offers a wide range of nibblers along with the your drinks. these include plates of olives, pickled vegetables, almonds and cheeses like benedict blue and grey owl.
Besides the drinks and light nibblers Brockton General is celebrated for its simple yet tasty appetizers and main courses. One of the favorites at the restaurant is the seared duck breast with rhubarb compote and scallion pancakes. Another dish that will make your mouth water is the seared pork loin served with pea shoots and grilled peppers. Each of these dishes will set you back by about 15-20 dollars. For desert its best to try the cinnamon apple cake with maple cream.
The service at the restaurant is warm and friendly. The servers are usually the owners themselves. Everything at Brockton General is executed to perfection and affordably priced. It is truly a place which care about what they serve to you and how they serve it to you. The ambience of the restaurant gives you the same feeling as having lunch or dinner at a friends house on a weekend. The Brockton General is one of the best kept secrets of Toronto. But like Most secrets it will soon be revealed to one and all.
